THE FARM

Hoofenfeather Farm is a privately owned equestrian center and working farm.  We are located on the picturesque Shubenacadie River in Dutch Settlement, approximately halfway between Halifax and Truro.  While our primary focus is the equestrian center, we also raise sheep, goats, alpacas, and chickens.

We have separate facilities for each of the animals- while the sheep, goats, and alpacas come and go from their large run in as they please, the horses are brought in overnight.  Currently, we have 12 stalls, and will be expanding to add 4 more this fall.

Keeping the animals here healthy starts with a supply of good quality hay that we grow and harvest ourselves over 150 acres each year, amounting to nearly 8,000 square bales, along with turnout in large group pastures seeded with mixed grasses for forage. Horses’ diets are also supplemented with customized feed and supplement plans divided into morning and afternoon feeds as directed by their owners.

In 2016, the farm underwent a massive expansion, more than doubling the footprint and creating space for additional tack rooms, a feed room, 12 horses, the sheep, goats, and alpacas, and hay storage for up to 6,000 bales.

Our staff includes stable hands that are individually trained to take care of the horses, farm hands who assist with projects/maintenance/and hay, an equestrian advisor with 15 years of experience, and our owners who live on site and oversee all of the daily management of the farm.  We are proud to employ and train local youth to assist with farm chores, providing them with employment opportunities and skills unique to working with large animals.

As a private facility, we are passionate about creating an innovative experience for equestrians and continue to improve and expand the equestrian center in ways that we know will benefit the equestrian community.  Horse welfare is paramount, feed quality is vital, and we are lucky to have a number of renowned veterinary, farrier, chiro, massage, and equestrian experts available for consultation to ensure that all of the horses at the farm are as happy and healthy as they can be.

Our owners bought the property in 2005, and after dipping their toes in the waters of raising cattle, sheep, lambs, and turkeys, they quickly settled back into horses and knew that they, and the property, couldn’t be better suited.  Their background in farming, agriculture, and building, coupled with their love of animals, means that Hoofenfeather Farm has become a facility where the horses are always number one.

We are so proud of the work we have put into the farm and are always eager to grow and improve in any way we can.  We’d love to hear from you, so don’t hesitate to reach out on our “Contact” page and let us know what you think!
