Hoofenfeather Farm

Sheep & Goats

2007 is definitely the year of the lamb for us. Our 7 Ewes produced 11 lambs, 3 boys and 8 girls. This just doubled the size of our flock to 15 sheep. All the babies were born without any problems and most of the moms were good. We had some difficulty with 2 of the moms bonding with their babies. After a couple days of holding the mother down so the babies could get the essential first few days of colestrom from their mothers milk, we had to bottle feed for a while.

Our ram "Bubba" did his job well this year and it saddens me and at the same time brings great relief that "Bubba" was sold to another farm in April 2007. A new bloodline was needed for future breeding and "Bubba" who exceeded 200 lbs, was getting a little too crazy with people. At present we are looking for a new ram for the fall breed.

Lambing this year was the end of April, first of May. We keep all of our ewes and the boys go off to market later in the fall. One of our many projects to get finished is the completion of the new sheep barn.

"Sophie" the goat , as mentioned in the Cows section, winters with the cows. The end result is a goat that eats like a cow, a very happy and very fat goat. "Sophie" will spend the summer and fall out with the sheep in their yard. Hopefully the running around will assist in getting a ton or two off her !

Enjoy some of the photos of our ewes and their babies.........and fat "Sophie".
