Hoofenfeather Farm

About Hoofenfeather Farm

The farm was purchased in July 2005 after 2 years of searching rural Nova Scotia for a mid size property where we could have a working farm that was not too big for us to handle. The moment we saw this property we fell in love with it.

The property covers approximately 35 acres and is bordered on the north by highway 277 leading into Dutch Settlement and continuing on to the Hoofenfeather MoonMusquodoboit Valley. The south is bordered by 500+ feet of the Shubenacadie river. We are located 10 minutes from the Robert Stanfield International Airport and 30 minutes from the old city of Halifax. The vast majority is undeveloped woodland consisting mostly of a mix of hard and soft wood with several creeks meandering through the property and feeding into the Shubenacadie River.

Since we had owned a property for the last 40 years in Musquodoboit, we had driven past this property hundreds of times. We were always impressed with the fences which are constricted of rail way tie posts and 2" x6" rails. We were always curious as to what laid at the end of this very long driveway into a property of which only the front pasture, fences and a hint of barn could be seen from the road.

The barn which is insulated consists of a feed room, a tac room and 6 stalls. The large loft can hold as many as 1500 + bails of hay. We have replaced the old copper water pipes in the barn with new heated plastic and have improved the lighting both inside the barn and out.

Presently we are redoing the tac room with hopes of installing cement floors in both the tac room and feed room by 2008. We have also started replacing the old stall doors with new sturdier ones.

There is approximately 6-8 acres of fenced pasture and a competition size sand riding ring. The creek which runs through the front pasture provides a natural water source for the grazing animals for most of the year. The location for our pond has been selected after several test holes were dug and is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. Construction onm the new sheep barn continues along with a fenced in yard and housing for pigs which is located a good distance from the house. Construction also continues on our trail through the property down to the Shubenacadie River.

Hoofenfeather Farm is a Registered Farm Business within the Province of Nova Scotia , members of the Nova Scotia Wool Growers Association and a member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture.

We hope that by visiting our site, you crack a smile just as we did once we got in and had a look around.
